In 2011 former Lord Mayor John Chedid and new local state member Dr. Geoff Lee joined the launch of Homeless Persons Week in Parramatta for the first time. Both were really impressed with the event and the turnout on the Bikers Australia Blanket Run. John was moved to announce ” …bikies are welcome in Parramatta.’
In 2012 Geoff was joined by new Lord Mayor Lorraine Wearne and both spoke of the great need in Parramatta amongst homeless people and the great work done by various church, welfare and community groups.
103.2 FM joined in with a blanket collection of their own and McDonalds organised a fundraiser at its Rosehill store in late July as well as a ‘Happy Hands’ programme in four stores to help cover the costs of the launch along with sponsor Parramatta Accountants who help pay the bills each year.
www.hpwparramatta.org.au has details about events in 2015 Homeless Persons Week.
In 2015 a number of community organisations joined in the ‘Donate a Blanket Campaign’ including Northmead Anglican Church, Rosehill McDonalds, Parramatta East Public School and Hope 103.2 FM.
Special thanks go to Bikers Australia for their tireless work over two decades in providing blankets for the homeless in Sydney’s West. Well done guys and gals!
